Company History

S&M Moving Systems has a long history of moving family goods as well as commercial products and entire organizations. It has grown from a small, general freight and local delivery service to one of the nation's largest, full-service, moving and storage companies. S&M Moving Systems capabilities are: packing and transportation for household goods, electronics, displays and exhibits, special commodities, office and industrial, and international moves.

S&M Moving Systems joined United in 1974. Today, as a stock-holding agent for United Van Lines, S&M Moving Systems is consistently ranked within the top 10 agents for United Van Lines domestically and ranks in the top 3 agents for global services.

The company is family-owned and operated, as it has been since its inception in 1918. Currently run by fourth generation Stadler family members, the company's President is Steve Todare, son-in-law of Gerry Stadler. Gerry is the grandson of founder R.J. Stadler. Gerry was raised in the business, as was his father, Giles.

S&M Moving systems employs more than 400 people with corporate headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona and branch offices in Fremont, California; Santa Fe Springs, CA; Albuquerque, New Mexico; San Jose, Costa Rica and Malaysia.

The company's current fleet of 150 trucks and trailers is a far cry from the one pickup truck with which its founder began the business.

R.J. Stadler came West from St. Louis in 1905 and tried his hand at a number of things before he found his niche. Trucking as a business was almost accidental. When R.J. would go into Los Angeles from Inglewood, people would ask him to pick up items for them. He realized there was a need and soon had one of the first trucking franchises to operate on the Los Angeles/Beach Cities route.

R.J. formed the original freight-shipping company - S&M Transfer & Storage, Co., in 1918 with partner Frank Meyer. The partnership did not last long as Frank sold his interest in the company in 1922. Within a short period of time R.J. obtained several significant freight rights and built the first household goods warehouse in Redondo Beach, California.

R.J.'s son, Giles, was at the helm of the firm when it experienced almost explosive growth in the post-World War II years of the 1940s until 1975 when he retired. Giles combined his keen sales and marketing eye with such timely national innovations as growth of the interstate highway infrastructure and development of the diesel engine.

Gerry Stadler assumed control of S&M Moving Systems in 1974 and saw the company through deregulation in 1980. This created a whole new marketplace, further allowing the company to expand. He was elected to serve as United Van Lines’ Chairman of the Board, serving from April, 2001 until April, 2007.

With Gerry’s retirement, the company’s control was passed to Jay Stadler, a fourth generation Stadler member, and Jay’s brother-in-law, Steve Todare. Steve currently assumes the role of President of S&M Moving Systems.

Over the years, S&M Moving Systems gradually sold its freight business and, in 1952, expanded into Torrance with the purchase of Torrance Van & Storage Co. When long-distance moving increased to become a specialty in the 1950s, the company built a site in Torrance as its hub warehouse. Outgrowing the Torrance facility was impetus for the company to build a state of the art structure in Santa Fe Springs, California. S&M Moving Systems was one of the first to use "Tilt-up Construction" as its method to build. This new, innovative architecture again proved S&M to be a leader in the moving and storage industry.

S&M Moving Systems now uses technology to service our clients’ increasingly sophisticated needs. Specially designed equipment, such as air-ride suspension systems in flat-floored vehicles, allows the movers to adjust loads and keep them level while eliminating 75 percent of road shock. Power-lift gates, special loading mechanisms to handle sensitive computer hardware, and specialized training ensure the safe transport of the most delicate equipment. Examples of high-value shipments S&M Moving Systems has successfully moved include a complete blood lab, a one-of-a-kind diffusion x-ray machine, and an entire computer manufacturer's inventory.
